Collective inquiry

Periodically we will host an electronic collective inquiry, centered around our beliefs.

To participate in this process, you must be a registered, logged in user of this website. (To create an account, choose "Create an account" below the log in block to the right. You are logged in if you can see the "Log out" option in the Navigation menu on the right.)

The first session was completed on May 10, 2008. There is another session beginning May 19, 2008. There will be 9 questions all together, and some may contain more than one part, spread over two weeks.

If you are unfamiliar with the soil carbon opportunity or issue, there are brief materials on this website; try the Slideshow and Soil Carbon 101.

Ground rules

Electronic communication severely limits transmission of information. It is estimated that 7% of human communication is represented by the actual words we use. The remaining 93% is derived from tone, pitch, volume, facial expressions, eye contact, and “body language.” Given this acute imbalance between verbal and non-verbal cues, it is crucial to establish a protocol for electronic communication that will maximize the potential for meaningful communication. The following ground rules are designed to foster the desired outcome of transformational change in an electronic environment.

1) Each person agrees to "listen" with respect to ideas presented by others.

2) One answer per person per question (9 questions, some with more than one part). The purpose of this exercise is not to engage in debate, but to bring about changes in core beliefs and behaviors.

3) Each person agrees to engage with each question. Responses need not be complex or involved. The simplest answer is acceptable. The important element here is keeping the dialogue going.

4) Once we start, let's agree to not add new people to the discussion for the remainder of the question set.

5) Diversity adds richness to our discussion! Let us not limit participation to any specific groups. The only limitation is agreement to following the ground rules.

6) Participants commit to the following protocol if, for any reason, they need to leave the inquiry process before it is completed. To wit: provide an answer to the questions: "How do you feel about the inquiry? What did you learn that will help you successfully foster transformational change?"
