Soil Use and Management, 2001(17): 294-96 reports that soil sampling in 1980, and again in same locations in 1999, showed significant increases in soil carbon to 20 cm depth. Grassland to forest samples showed an increase from 1.06% organic matter to 2.28%, an increase of 4.1% per year over 19 years. Samples in farmland that had become grassland showed an increase from 1.05% to 1.45% organic matter, and farmland to forest showed 1.15 to 1.39% organic matter. The authors credit the increase in forest land to the Household Responsibility System, a land reform begun in 1979 which gave land rights to individual farmers.
